The City of Toronto has partnered with Miovision, a Kitchener-based technology company, to help provide a deeper analysis of the new Bloor Street bike lanes.
The new bike lanes were installed on Bloor Street from Shaw Street to Avenue Road as part of a year-long pilot project to measure the impact of cycling infrastructure along a busy downtown street.
Miovision’s video processing technology allows for greater analysis of traffic impacts by providing traffic counts, as well as tracking anomalies, such as sudden decelerations that could identify where close calls between cars and cyclists have occurred.
Their technology has been installed along the Bloor Street corridor to measure both the pre and post-construction traffic impacts. While Miovision’s technology has been used globally this is the first time it has been deployed in Toronto. The company has provided the technology at no charge to the City.
Miovision will work with the University of Toronto’s Transportation Research Institute to capture and analyze multi-modal traffic data to study changes in traffic operations. The pilot measurement will also feature:
- Ontario Traffic Inc. will complete multi-modal traffic counts and a GPS-tracked travel time analysis.
- Toronto Parking Authority will complete a parking utilization study
- An Economic Impact Study will be completed by the Toronto Centre for Active Transportation in partnership with the University of Toronto, local Business Improvement Areas and the Metcalf Foundation.
The analysis will be the city’s most rigorously evaluated cycling project, Mayor John Tory has said. “What you try do in business is make your decisions based on rational sets of facts – and that comes from measurement, in some form or another.”
The partnership with Miovision is part of Mayor Tory and the City of Toronto’s ongoing push to collaborate with technology companies to help improve decision making and the delivery of services to Toronto’s residents and businesses.
